The Perkins School for the Blind work has given me the opportunity to design and fabricate a variety of products for the students there.
The work is a combination of design and engineering, frequently consisting of one-off products, designed for a specific student.
I work with an
occupational therapist to help provide a better experience for the students, some with multiple developmental issues and
physical limitations
along with vision problems.
Because the products are made in low volumes and there is a limited budget, they are designed to be made of low cost materials.
Wood, items found at a home center or hardware store, and donated materials are frequently used.

Coffee Bean Grinder Fixture
Design Problem: Provide a way for a person with limited sensory input and with developmental issues to operate a coffee bean blade grinder.
The grinder fixture addresses the difficulty of locating the small area on the grinder that is pressed to operate the grinder.

Perkins School for the Blind - Assistive Device Center - Rain Stick Project
The problem consisted of a low cost adaptation of a “rain stick” so that it could be used by a student. The student was unable to hold the stick in
order to play it in a concert. I was asked to find a solution so that the student could participate in the concert. This device enabled the stick to be
mounted to a music stand and used by any student.

Design Problem: Revamp existing instructions for "Little Room" assembly.
The Little Room was previously designed by Dr Lilli Nielsen to encourage a child to explore their surroundings by interacting with textured walls and hanging objects.
Developed instruction manual with images and text to instruct a parent to assemble a "Little Room" from a kit or from common parts.
